Not the good kind of bad.

I just saw this at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival 31. I have a few observations to offer.

This movie certainly falls within the realm of "there go eighty minutes of my life that I'll never get back again". In fact I have two quite earnest theories about this movie that may account for at least a part of its overall horribility.

It is quite obvious that the film was only minimally scripted. There were all the hallmarks of improvised dialog, but not in an artsy experimental cinema kind of way. More like "OK, We've got this sound stage for an hour, but no dialog written. Action!" My other suspicion is that the studio contracted for a film of a specific length, and the director was actively trying to pad it out. This is quite obvious. Another commenter mentioned product placements for Longines watches, but not every time we were subjected to real-time half-minute closeups of clocks were we looking at a Longines.

Finally, If I ever hear Borodin's "Stranger in Paradise" again, I'll strangle myself! It was played at least twelve times, I'd swear.

I've officially named the villain "Mr. Tiki-Head" for reasons that will be obvious if you have the misfortune to view this dreadful excuse for a movie.

A great oater

Rory Calhoun was a staple hero in all kinds of films during the 50s. His performances were always great, abetted by his handsome, rugged looks and the ease into which he fit into a number of hero roles. In this one, a kind of standard western, he plays an ex-lawman who returns to the trade when his partner is killed. During the time he cleans up the town, defeats bad guys played by veteran character actors Carl Betz and John Dehner, gets his semi-revenge, on the antihero, played by Cameron Mitchell, wows the French bombshell, Corinne Calvert and, of course, gets the girl. It's great 50s entertainment with a total lack of CGI action, extensive blood and gore and good honest villains and good guys. (*sigh) They just don't make movies like this any more. Watch for it on the late show. There's no DVD or video listed. Calhoun was always worth the price of admission.

Big Radios, Beauty Pageants, and a War in Korea

It's a clever premise, but the results have dated rather badly. Unfortunately, the comedy level never reaches the sparkle it needs, though the opening vignette (Rogers and Allen) comes close. Perhaps that's not surprising given Director Goulding's credits, which suggest he's more at home with Bette Davis melodrama than with material of this sort. Also, I'm surprised a big-budget studio like Fox didn't film this in Technicolor, which would have added a lot to the atmospherics. Instead, we get dour gray tones that undercut the light-hearted mood, making the movie look older than it is. But then, 1952 was a year Hollywood was looking to retool in the face of TV's onslaught. The following year would see an explosion of wide- screen color beyond the reach of the livingroom tube. As a result, this comedy venture may have been caught in the transition.

To me, the Allen-Rogers sequence is the best. It's actually a rather scathing look at entertainment make-believe and the relentless assault of commercial advertising. In private life the two are barely speaking, while on radio they play a pair of happy marrieds who trade comic barbs in between pushing the sponsors' goofy products. It's rather deftly and bitingly done, even though the 57-year old Allen looks like he's been on a two-week bender. In passing—note that even though we see a number of living rooms, no TV's are in sight, only radios! This was Hollywood in its final stage of denial.

The other vignettes are mildly entertaining, with a look at a number of performers on the way up the ladder-- Monroe, Marvin, Wayne, Gaynor. Especially satisfying is the delicious opportunity the letter provides Calhern to turn the tables on the gold-digging Gabor and her grasping attorney. At least the screenplay had the good sense not to reconcile these two at the end. But notice how the script insists the others be reconciled in typical 50's happy ending style. This certainly rings hollow in the case of the feuding Allen-Rogers. Given a second chance, it's hard to see how they could possibly stay together. In the case of Douglas-Arden, the most incisive of the vignettes, they may be totally bored with one another (check the dinner scene), but are too complaisant to actually change. That strikes me as maybe not the funniest, but at least as the most realistic of the episodes.

Anyway, whatever the comedy lacks in sparkle, it is revealing of its time—radio, beauty pageants, war in Korea (implied in Bracken's troop ship). But I'm afraid that the clever premise plays better than the mild results.

Not scary... funny!

This creepy Mansion comedies are a dime a dozen. Everybody has one in their credits. Tin Tan, Pompín Iglesias, etc. Here the star is Clavillazo. The plot changes though, because the group of people who were called to get the inheritance, will not have to spend 3 days and 3 nights in the creepy Mansion before they die or go crazy; they can go home and live their lives as they usually do and only visit the Mansion by night. They have to endure 3 nights here, and if they survive, the money is theirs to keep. Most of that money will go to one niece of the deceased, Mercedes Benz (Alma Rosa Aguirre) while the rest will go to whoever finds it, because it's hidden. So, every night, the doctor, the lawyer, the girlfriend, the maid, the chauffeur, they all will try to outsmart the rest in a crazy race until the executioner shows up and start leaving less and less people to enjoy wealth. Is then when Mercedez Benz's boyfriend hires a private detective (Clavillazo) to find the hidden money fast and stop the killings. Very good comedy with hand made characters perfectly well designed and cast. There's nothing creepier than the maid (Enriqueta Reza), o Manuel Dondé, or José Chávez Throwe

When The Blunder For Plunder Has Gone A-Sunder

Even though American insurance adjuster, Al Colby (who was presently visiting Havana, Cuba) was somewhat of a disagreeable brute who thought nothing of shoving around both men and women whenever it suited his mood, he was still deemed so irresistible that he found not one, but two, sexy babes lusting after him as if he were the hottest hunk in tweed trousers.

With that in mind, I found Plunder Of The Sun (POTS) to be one of the most clichéd, predictable and, yes, decidedly dumb Crime/Adventure stories (with its preposterous double-whammy romance, thrown in for good measure) that I've seen, from the good, old 1950s, in a mighty long time.

Featuring some real goof-ball villains, annoying/boring femme fatales and various implausible (and highly laughable) situations, POTS' story about hunting for hidden treasure amongst the ancient ruins and pyramids at Monte Alban, Mexico, just didn't have what it takes to cut the mustard, from my point of view.

With its story being told mainly through flashbacks, including lots of voice-over narration by Al Colby (Glenn Ford's less-than-appealing character), POTS was definitely one of those movies that left this viewer quite dissatisfied and thinking to himself that this picture certainly had the potential to be a whole lot better than it was.

Even though POTS' running time was only a mere 80 minutes, it sure seemed to me that so much of the general action was all but worthless and easily forgettable.

As well, this film certainly lost a lot of its overall entertainment value by being filmed in stark b&w.

The many scenes that were shot amongst the Zapotec ruins near Oaxaca, Mexico, would have been so absolutely wonderful to behold had they been given the full Technicolor treatment.

And, finally, I thought that, as an actor, Glenn Ford was not at all well-suited for his part. Like, c'mon, Al Colby (that face-slapping heel) actually had 2 fairly hot women throwing themselves at him regardless of what dangers this might have posed to their immediate safety.

And, to me, that was preposterous beyond words.

A downhill ride

This is a collection of three short Noel Coward plays, which I watched despite reading only bad reviews about it. Well, they were right, and here's another bad review. The first play, at 25 minutes, is quite tolerable - has some very corny jokes, as a pro, and some awfully contrived acting as a definite con. With different actors, this could have been quite good, because it was a pretty interesting little tale. It easily could have done with another fifteen or so minutes run time as well. The second play, at 20 minutes, was...well...I don't think I have the words. It was BAD, but compelling, in a bizarre way. One of those things that makes you keep asking, "my god, did he REALLY say THAT???" The third one, at 40 minutes, was the killer, not even the always delightful Valerie Hobson could save it; the last 5 minutes luckily made up for the other 35 minutes of pain.

Recommended only for the very bored ;)

Rudolph Maté's rehash of older, better movies makes a decent enough second-feature

Even leftovers can be tasty. Rudolph Maté's Forbidden is a stir-fry composed of elements from several movies of the previous decade; Casablanca and To Have and Have Not are in the mix, but the dominant flavors are Macao and Gilda (on which Maté served as director of photography). And while there's nothing fresh about it, it staves off hunger for a feast of film noir – at least for a little while.

Tony Curtis comes to Macao, port of intrigue, on a mission: To locate Joanne Dru, widow of a slain Philadelphia gangster, and bring her back to America (she knows too much). Interests in the City of Brotherly Love chose Curtis because he and Dru were once a hot item; nonetheless, they had him followed by another operative (Marvin Miller, probably best remembered as the unseen John Beresford Tipton's secretary on TV's The Millionaire).

On his way into the Lisbon Club, which Dru's known to frequent, Curtis fends off a murderous attack on its owner (Lyle Bettger), who professes indebtedness and takes him back home to meet his fiancée – Dru. Jagged flashes of lightning alert us that the romance has rekindled. The rest of the movie relates Curtis' attempts to wrest Dru away from Bettger (who plays the George Macready role from Gilda).

There's many an expected slip ‘twixt cup and lip, however. Every clandestine conversation draws unseen eavesdroppers, bringing to mind Charlie Chan's sagacious warning: `Two ears for every mouth.' Thoughts of Chan also appear in the person of Victor Sen Yung, his #2 son in many movies, who plays the Dooley Wilson/Hoagy Carmichael role (from Casablanca and To Have and Have Not, respectively) as a piano player at the Lisbon Club who knows his away around the unknown Macao and puts himself at Curtis' disposal. But just when the imperilled couple think they're home-free, Bettger resurfaces with his shark's-maw smile....

Forbidden looks good, as one would expect from Maté, but it keeps a good pace as well (Maté's D.O.A. had to keep up with Edmond O'Brien's speed-walking, but his The Dark Past and Union Station had their longueurs). It breaks no new ground in the noir cycle, but, as a second-feature, it's decent enough.

Cheap and forgettable.

This is a surprisingly bad film. Now this is NOT because there were a lot of watchable jungle movies made from the 1930s-1950s. No--most of them were terrible. But, because this one starred the very famous African explorer, circus owner and lion tamer, Clyde Beatty, I expected a bit more--such as realism. But, once again, like all the second-rate Tarzan ripoffs of the era, the animals were occasionally from different continents (Africa and Asia) and the gorilla was yet another guy dressed up in a cheap gorilla costume. I just thought I'd see better than this.

As for the story, it's a bit odd. Instead of a normal narrative, it is told as a flashback--and a rather sketchy and episodic one at that. It seemed like they cut scenes from several different movies to make up this one--and perhaps they did. The first story is about a female big-game dealer (Phyllis Coates--of "Superman" fame). The second, in a carryover from the first, is about an evil big-game dealer. And, the third segment is about an evil white guy who controls a tribe of savages. None of the stories are very good and it's all set in the dense jungles of Africa--which, for the most part, are only in the movies as lions and the like do NOT live in such environments but in the savannas. Once again, this is a mythical representation of Africa and despite Beatty's presence, it seems little like the real thing. Which makes you wonder if either Beatty didn't care or perhaps he wasn't quite the awesome explorer he portrayed himself as being during his interesting life. Overall, pretty dull and forgettable.

Had me on the edge of my seat.

Although this movie is nearly fifty years old, it had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. What was going to happen next? Would the characters escape? I can't say much more, without giving away the story except - "Hunted" was brilliantly plotted and directed. Thumbs up to everyone concerned, including Dirk Bogarde as the wanted man, and Jon Whitely as the little boy whom he first used, and then befriended.

Italian romp in ancient Egypt

Okay, this movie is certainly not one of the best Italian epics of the time. However it certainly isn't either one of the horrible sword and sandal of the "Gli Schiavi piu forti del mondo" reputation. The sets and the costumes are very good, Sophia Loren is exquisite, Alberto Sordi looks bloody stupid. I did not manage to understand exactly what was going on, but still it was great fun watching it. I know there was Cleo who used to spend nights with soldiers and poison them the following morning; then one night she wanted to go and meet Mark Anthony and leaves a look alike back at the palace. A silly officer falls in love with her, mistaking her for Cleo. Cloe comes back from her night-time romp and (naturally) does not recognise the officer who swears will love her to death. Somehow someone attempts to murder the queen, but fails. I think Sordi kills the queen at the end by banging her head to a wall, but it is not clear what happens. He manages to escape with the look-alike. Understood? Anyway, Sophia Loren here is at her sexiest and funniest - she manages to make people laugh without acting silly like Sordi - it is an art in itself. Certainly not a memorable film, but still worth seeing just for kicks.

O.E. Hasse portrays Admiral Canaris, who, as head of the Abwehr, played a double game against Hitler

I watched a clear full screen print of this movie, running 108 minutes. The title frames read "Un leben fur Deutschland" ADMIRAL CANARIS.

One seldom sees such a well-done biographically-based movie. The picture focuses on the head of Germany's intelligence (Abwehr) and spying operations between 1935 and the time of his arrest by Hitler in 1944. His imprisonment and execution are not mentioned or shown.

This is a highly intriguing story, done in a very engaging and mature way. It manages very smoothly to integrate personal details and subplots with documentary footage and suspenseful spy sequences. The acting is very realistic, the events plausible, although certainly the story has been dramatized. It might possibly be criticized for being somewhat episodic, but I do not see that as a fault because each of the selected incidents and sequences is handled adeptly.

The script is really first rate. We know the characters and understand them. The details are engaging, both of personal beliefs, personal feelings and tragedies, personal pressures, the spying operations, and the internal conflicts between Canaris and Heydrich. The scenes that are selected for our viewing are invariably interesting. The script wisely does not stay strictly on Canaris. It opens out to the relationship between one of his younger assistants (Adrian Hoven) and a young woman (Barbara Rutting) induced by Heydrich to spy on Canaris. It also works in spy sequences in France and London.

Canaris favored Hitler in 1937, as a counter to the Soviet Union, but he changed his mind in 1938 and then covertly worked against the Nazi excesses and mad schemes.

Canaris, a loyal German, is shown as seeking for Germany to avoid wars that he knew it could not win. He brings to light intelligence showing German's disadvantages, but it is typically ignored by the Nazi leadership. In 1938, Canaris plots against Hitler, planning a coup d'etat. This fizzles out due to Munich. He obviously walks a tightrope in his efforts to bring some sanity to the Hitler regime, maintaining cordial relations on the surface with Reinhold Heydrich. The latter is shown as constantly seeking to bring down Canaris so that he can take over the intelligence operations led by Canaris. The conflict between the traditional values of Canaris and those of Heydrich is brought out. Hitler is seen and heard briefly and only in documentary footage.

O.E. Hasse does a great job in the role of Canaris. He's assisted ably by Wolfgang Preiss as his right-hand man. Martin Held does an exceptional job as Heydrich. The rest of the cast equally carry their roles smoothly and engagingly.

The photography is in noir style in many scenes. This adds.

Certainly anyone with an interest in this historical era, fans of spy movies, fans of intrigue, and those with an interest in films that involve Nazis will not want to pass up seeing this film if they have the opportunity.

When Sunshine Valley settlers face disaster because of a food shortage and medicine shortage, Gene Autry and Dan Coleman, father of Gene's friend Jennifer, buy supplies in Trail's End, but additional supplies promised by the operators of the town's only store, Lola Riker and her partner Ross McLain are not forthcoming. With the aid of the law and his friend Smiley, Gene gets a shipment through to Sunshine Valley, battling off a hi-jacking attempt but too late to prevent a little girl, Judy, from dying because of a lack of medicine. Gene heads for a showdown battle with McLain.

One of Gene's Last Movies Is Sadly At Best Routine

One of Gene's final Saturday matinée outings (his big screen tenure would end with "Last of the Pony Riders" later that year) before he devoted his time to his TV shows and other business activities to make him one of the wealthiest men in Hollywood. Sadly, "Pack Train" is at best a routine low budget oater. Even the action sequences, except for the last one which takes place aboard a speeding locomotive, are poorly edited and often the topography of the bad guys shooting at Gene is different from the topography of the Gene returning their fire. The story is meager, the humor lame, and even the music is sparse. The three songs are not bad being written by Gene and gifted songwriter Smiley Brunette. "God's Little Candle," by Gene and Smiley is pleasing and the harmony easy on the ears. Novelty tunes were Smiley's forte and "Hominy and Grits" as performed by Smiley is light-hearted and fun to hear. The other one, "Wagon Train," is lackluster but passable.

One plus for the film is seeing Gene, Smiley, and Gene's new leading lady from Arkansas, Gail Davis, together. Pat Buttram's wife, Sheila Ryan, makes a believable lady outlaw whose in collusion with veteran character actor, Kenne Duncan. Tom London who plays Gail Davis' father in the film is always a treat for western fans. In a change of roles, Harry Lauter plays a good bad guy who because Gene spares his life sells out his boss so Gene can nab him. And then there's always Champion, who often upstaged the human actors.

The plot centers around a group of settlers sponsored by Gene who are in dire need of supplies or face starvation and disease. The only supplies in town are controlled by the crooks who attempt to cheat the new arrivals. For a change the title of the movie actually describes the story as Smiley uses a pack train to get the supplies where needed.

I would recommend this shoot-em-up for Gene's multitude of fans who are interesting in seeing his last three westerns. His TV shows of 1953 are actually better made. Other viewers beware.

Singing In Cadence Count

The film Sound Off is titled that to take advantage of Vaughn Monroe's hit record of The Duckworth Chant aka Sound Off. It sold a ton of records back at the time and is the main musical feature of the film.

The other feature is Mickey Rooney's effervescent personality which is working on all cylinders in Sound Off. He plays a nightclub comedian who gets his greetings from the president and has to go in the army to the distress of his agent Sammy White who certainly isn't going to get much of a commission of 10% of Mickey's army pay.

The idea is hardly original in fact the same year Sound Off came out for Columbia, Mickey's old home studio of MGM put out Because You're Mine which featured Mario Lanza as an opera singing draftee.

There's a lieutenant/nurse played by Anne James who Mickey has to compete with Major John Archer for. And Gordon Jones plays Mickey's training sergeant who actually isn't such a bad guy, he just wants Mickey to just straighten out. In fact the best sequence in the film involves Mickey before he gets his draft notice using Jones as a foil in his nightclub act. Jones responds in a good fashion, but lets the Mick know there are no hard feelings if he just soldiers up.

Definitely a film for the Mick's still strong legion of fans.

Raging Toro

"This is Los Angeles: sprawling metropolis of the west. It's a beautiful city. It walks like a young giant from the mountains down to the sea. It has shiny buildings and modern freeways. Almost engulfed by the city surrounding it lies a little street "Olvera street." A street that appears to be forgotten by time."

Thus starts the movie with tourists taking pictures of "the lazy Mexicans."

A Mexican family falls on hard times when the father is laid off. Bad timing, it turns out. The family had just bought new furniture and are very proud of the blue sofa and matching chairs (the film is b&w so the chairs look grey to us). "Send it back!" demands the father. The son says he will get a job to help pay for the furniture but the father says "you are only a boy." Storming out of the house the son goes to "the clubhouse" to see his friends. Harassed by bigoted white police and denied service by white owned businesses "Tommy" lets his rage out and gets in a fight.

Tommy is seen fighting by a talent scout - one who is interested in making Tommy a professional fighter. "Don't you want to be something? Do you want to be pushed around like your dad?" Tommy is convinced and "Tommy Kansas" is born.

Tommy's father thinks it's a disgrace. "I am a poor man, but I am not a brute!" But the rest of the family is behind him. "If you do not give up fighting you will leave this house!" exclaims his father as he storms off.

I will admit to not being a big boxing fan. This film, however, kept my interest. The main character "Tommy" is well played and his transformation from naive street kid to young seasoned boxer makes this film worthwhile.
