It must be the form.Visually,it's a splendor: few directors can take advantage of the seaside landscapes as Emilio Fernandez did:think Lean' s "Ryan's daughter" or Jean Grémillon's "Remorques".Some will say that the symbolism -a breaker- is ponderous.The director was probably influenced by Bunuel for symbols abound.There's a big difference though:whereas Bunuel's obsessions often deal with sex cum religion,"la red" is thoroughly pagan.Rossanna Podesta epitomizes some kind of Goddess,of Eve before the fall .A Madonna's face but a sensual body and a false innocence :it was not surprising Robert Wise would cast her as Helen of Troy.
Even more disturbing than the threatening omnipresence of the sea is the script: 75% of "la red " is devoid of any dialog.Looks and smiles tell everything (the meal is a good example) Two males and a female ,that's no good,one character says.All are caught up in "the net " (the beach ) ,a dead end.The only way to get out of this world is the sea.

Maverick, where are you going
Okay, Maureen O'hara's dresses are over the top and half the cast in most scenes, seems to be thinking, "why is she wearing that". Still, the movie has some interesting qualities and good moments. First, we have a woman who not only looks pretty and sexy, but can ride fast, think and use a gun. The writer, Polly James, is probably responsible for the fact that we have an interesting and strong woman character in the lead, a refreshing change for a 1953 Western. Second, the film makes several references to Maverick. First Jeanne Cooper (36 years on the Guiding light soap opera later) gets called a maverick, then Maureen O'hara starts referring to Sheriff Stain Blaine as "Maverick". This was four years before the "Maverick" television series and probably this movie was an inspiration for it. William Bishop, as the heavy, Jim Averell, is a much more interesting character than the drifter Sheriff played by Alex Nicol. Bishop is also a better actor than Nicol. The plot twists are silly, but fun. For example, at one point, when you think there is going to be a battle between two gangs, the sheriff convinces everybody to throw their gun belts on a wagon. Surprisingly everybody does it. I just wondered how they were going to get the fifty or so gun belts redistributed back to their original owners when they left. There's some fun in watching Dennis Weaver (later "Gunsmoke" and "McCloud") in one of his earliest roles. He's fine. Also Jack Kelley who went on to play Bart Maverick in the television series is around in a slightly smaller part. Altogether, this is a rather pleasant 80 minutes. Maureen O'Hara, feminists and Western fans should especially enjoy it. Incidentally, costume designer, Edward Stevenson, went on to win an Oscar in 1960 for "the Facts of Life." He designed costumes for over 190 movies. Guess, everybody has an off-day.

One more One Thousand and One Nights Tale
Well, let's not forget that's also one more Sam Katzman production. The (IN)FAMOUS Sam Katzman, who haunted Columbia Studios for many years, with his cheap movies. This one is colorful, watchable, bearable and not as disappointing as other productions from this era. I don't understand what the mighty Gloria Grahame did in that film. Perhaps she opened the wrong studio entrance. Gloria Grahame who electrified the audiences in Fritz Lang's Big Heat, and the very same year !!!
Sam Katzman was only the producer, and the interesting Richard Bare the director. As far as I know, he did not work with Katzman on another picture. But perhaps I am wrong. I'll check. Katzman was the owner of this one indeed. Technicians are always the same, when you watch the credits, including the music score artist: Mischa Bakalaneikoff...who performed on almost all Sam Katzman films. Perhpas all of them. And not only Katzman ones.
Back to Prisoners of the Casbah, it takes place in Algiers, but it could have been Bagdad or Damascus. Who cares?...
Katzman has done better - Siren of Bagdad and Serpent of the Nile, with a surprising ending - but Universal productions starring Jon Hall and Maria Montez were a thousand times better. No comparison. Even if this one is - I repeat - not charmless.

Mad scientists, giant spiders and a cult of weird women!
Director Ron Ormond has quite a reputation for his wild and wacky exploitation films before he had a near-death experience and made wild and wacky religious films. This is a film that will drive most people out of their skull because of one reason: the music score is made up of a short flamenco guitar piece that is repeated over and over and over. Surely an absurd plot can be accepted my most but the constant recurring flamenco motif is enough to send the feeble-minded into fits of madness. Besides the big spider, you won't forget Tandra Quinn's bizarre and exotic dance in a bar that whips one guy into such a frenzy that he shoots her. Image's DVD from Wade Williams isn't much better than VHS with a shaky picture, soft contrasts and muffled audio but it's nice to see cheap obscure B-movies like this being released on disc at all.

Ah...
What great stars! Keel and Grayson are excellent in this, with the lovely song So In Love, among many others. Tommy Rall is underused. He was in the same amount of numbers as the marvelous Ann Miller, but got minimum screen time, with the exception of Why Can't You Behave. Ann Miller was nothing short of awesome, with four numbers and ample attention in all of them. Too Darn Hot, Tom Dick or Harry, Why Can't You Behave, Always True To You In My Fashion, and From This Moment On (to a lesser degree) belong to her. A perfect movie for her fans. I urge you, run, don't walk to the nearest video store and pray that they have KISS ME KATE!

Brotherly love .........
This later film from the singing cowboy's career boasts good writing and is further aided by the presence of the great Smiley Burnette. Gene takes on a protection racket, murderers and a wayward kid brother. Along the way, he croons a few tunes and Smiley gets to sing & clown around as comic relief.
This film was not especially noteworthy, but the teaming of Autry, Smiley and Gail Davis was an enjoyable combination. Bob Livingston also appears in this pretty standard Autry film. The action was nicely done, but more action scenes would have been preferable.
This one is average, but Autry fans should enjoy it.

Very mixed feelings here
If you are an opera fan you'll find much to like, if you're not you won't so much. As a lifelong opera enthusiast and someone who wants a career in it, Giuseppe Verdi was interesting and I'm glad I saw it. But the overall result wasn't really that mind-blowing. There are definitely a lot of things to love, the characterisations of Verdi and second wife Giuseppina are spot on, intense and affecting. The music is outstanding as well, Rigoletto, Otello, Nabucco and Il Trovatore all to name a few are a sheer treat to listen to and staged very well, the Otello death scene is incredibly powerful. As is the singing, especially with Mario De Monaco and Tito Gobbi. Del Monaco sounds absolutely thrilling and doesn't resort to the shouty quality his voice did have later on while Tito Gobbi sings with deep feeling, great word painting and he practically embodies Rigoletto especially through his voice alone. The direction does feel rather dull though, and the film while not amateurish isn't a beautiful-looking film either, rather flat instead. The story doesn't really ring true, it's interesting definitely and gets to the point well enough but gets melodramatic and only really comes to life in the opera stagings. The dialogue is also very soap-operatic in tone and while it was nice to see Donizetti, Rossini and Victor Hugo featured apart from the performances of Verdi and Giuseppina the rest fall into caricatures. In conclusion, very mixed on Giuseppe Verdi, interesting but not great. Opera fans will be in heaven, those wanting good dialogue and direction will be disappointed. 5/10 Bethany Cox

A psychiatrist uses a truth serium to find the reasons for his abnormal behaviour.

Art Grind Hybrid, Find a Copy!
This is a wonderful period piece with the feel of Kubrick's "Killer's Kiss"; made around the same time. Though clumsy in places, it's still more professional and better than "Kiss", and perhaps as interesting a visual walk through fifties New York City.
A homicidal photographer hunts down and kills women who reject him, until he is caught by a sweaty, working class cop. An interestingly progressive view of a maniac, the killer is a kind man caught in a compulsion he cannot control. Many of the actors seem to be real people playing themselves; though this is for the most part more effectively done than in many more "respectable" films.
When the stripper snaps "You make my skin crawl, you jerk!" it chills to the bone. New Yorkers may find many locations still recognizable, and you gotta love the big poodle. According to IMDB, no one here was ever involved in another
film but the producer, who went on to bring us the films of the notorious Andy Milligan. Too bad, much talent is on hand. Find a copy!

The Mind Boggles At The Possibility
Warner Brothers musical Three Sailors And A Girl is based, very loosely based I might add on the George S. Kaufman play The Butter And Egg Man that ran on Broadway during the Twenties. It was one of Kaufman's earliest successes and one he did without a collaborator, unusual for him. It was the Navy participation in this film that was original.
Otherwise the plot has some down and out producer suckering a country yokel out of a lot of money to produce his show. In the film, the yokel is a sailor played by Gordon MacRae with a stern sense of morality, rather unusual for someone in the Navy. The crew has been on active duty for almost a year and their back pay which they've been unable to spend amounts to a considerable nest egg. While on Wall Street looking for an investment, MacRae, Gene Nelson, and Jack E. Leonard run into producer Sam Levene and he gets the boys to invest in his show. And the attraction is leading lady Jane Powell who falls for Gordon big time.
No big hits come from the score written by Sammy Fain and Sammy Cahn, but the numbers are serviceable to the plot. MacRae and Powell make a good team musically, too bad they were at different studios and didn't do more films together, Powell was on loan from MGM. Gene Nelson was as always great in the dance numbers, I've said it before on other of his films I've reviewed, he came along ten years too late, what a really big dancing star he would have been.
Jack E. Leonard was an early version of Don Rickles. I remember seeing him many times on the Ed Sullivan Show as a kid. His character was interesting, but too bad we didn't get one of his insult monologues for which he was so famous.
Part of the plot involves MacRae taking over the show and making a holy hash of it and Jane Powell calling in George Abbott, Ira Gershwin, and Moss Hart to contribute their talents to save the show. The real people weren't in Three Sailors And A Girl, just actors playing them. But as the show originated with George S. Kaufman, had all these people put their talents into this film for real, we might have seen a real classic unfold.

Only half a biography since it tells only half of her story...
SO THIS IS LOVE is said to be based on a biography of singer Grace Moore, but it only touches on her early life and determination to become an opera singer, up until her New York City debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in "La Boheme." Before it reaches that point, it gives KATHRYN GRAYSON a chance to sing a variety of songs in coloratura style, but since the story does not cover Miss Moore's Hollywood career at all, many of her most well-known songs had to be omitted. Instead, we get a sprinkling of a few opera numbers and many other pop standards, all of them suitable for Grayson's voice. She's in fine form vocally and delivers all of the songs with her customary charm and grace.
MERV GRIFFIN, before his celebrity and TV fame, makes his second appearance in a movie as one of Miss Moore's admirers and gets to warble "I Kiss Your Hand Madame" while doing a nice job on the vocals. WALTER ABEL and ANN DORAN play Grayson's parents, not at all thrilled that she wants to leave her small town life for a fling at stardom in the big city.
Grayson has a role that is tailor-made for her own background as a singer. DOUGLAS DICK is rather colorless as another disappointed suitor who can't compete with her operatic ambitions, but FORTUNIO BONANOVA is excellent as a sympathetic voice coach who makes sure that she takes proper care of her throat condition before returning to him for his coaching.
The story simply ends with her first appearance at the Met as Mimi in "La Boheme." Opera fans should enjoy this tribute to Miss Moore, and fans of Miss Grayson should appreciate the care taken to photograph her in beautiful close-ups while she takes aim at arias by Gounod and Puccini.

Shane must clear out all the guns from the valley before he can ride off with Joey hollering "Shane ... Shane ... Come Back!"

Simple peaceful lifestyles threatened by land grabbing ranchers and sinister gunslinger, saved by a weary reluctant gunslinger.
This western epitomises how a film should be made.
Classic scenery and outstanding performances from all. From the various cultures of the farmers bonding together through the harshness of farming life. Happy to raise families on land built and developed by their own hands. This is then threatened by the ranchers unwillingness to share the common land. Brutality and force is their tool, they try to force out the farmers (even resorting to hiring the gunslinger - Jack Wilson - Jack Palance). One farmer holds the other farmers together (Starett - Van Heflin), though even his resistance is weakening until a lone retired gunslinger rides in to save the day...
The sheer quality of characters and acting makes this film. The friendly (though not always) banter over Torrey's rebel background, the bond amongst the children, the affection shown in all families. The turning of Chris Calloway, the cold hearted nature of Ryker.
Finally the performances of the main characters. Van Heflin and Jean Arthur as the Starett's have a simple but loving relationship. Their son Joey loves his parents, but is greatly impressed by the mystery and skill of Shane (Alan Ladd).
Shane is reluctant to return to the way of the gun until Ryker hires a top gunslinger (Jack Palance). Palance is the perfect clinically precise cold hearted killer. Every aspect of his manner portrays cold efficiency (even to drinking water and mounting his horse).
There is simple humour added, for example when Shane is hit with an "Easy Chair".
Even the two dogs could act ! When Shane finally confronts Wilson the dog in the bar skulks with his tail between his legs.
The scenery and music were the icing on the cake.
This film will remain a benchmark for all western's to follow.

Air combat in the Korean War
A very good movie concerning the men who flew combat aircraft known as Sabre Jets during the Korean War. Robert Stack does an excellent job as a brooding combat pilot presented with the daily anxieties of life and death in the air over Korea while embroiled in a reunion with his ex, who is stationed at the same Air Force base as a journalist. Good interplay between Coleen Gray and Robert Stack in this role. The plot, of course, has been used before in WWII movies, but the urgency of the then new jet aircraft and jet combat makes the situations more tense. The air combat scenes are spectacular if you'll forgive the painting of American aircraft as Russian built MIG's. Along the same lines but based more on real characters is The McConnell Story, made two years later in 1955. Sabre Jet is a movie that will appeal to air combat fans with a decent storyline as well.

Plays It So Cool
I totally enjoyed this movie! I especially liked that EGR played his character cool, calm and collected. You don't see him yelling at his men and gesticulating all over the place! He portrayed his character as an adept psychologist, an independent thinker, who exhibits grace under fire. He uses compassion and sensitivity in a reassuring way. He sees all of the pieces to a puzzle and knows exactly where to place them in order to make a full picture.
The locations, cars and clothes just blew me away. I grew up in Los Angeles during the early 50's, and I remember riding in a 1949 Ford and 1953 Buick that my father owned.
The way the men looked in their full dress suits and sky highs (slang term for hats); and the women in their quiet elegance (never without gloves); is one of the reasons I love movies from the 40's and 50's.
Even to this day, if I pass through an old part of Los Angeles that is somewhat still intact (which is rare) from that time; it brings back old sweet memories, and I want to stay in that time warp and never come out. If you like EGR, cars, great locations, clothes, coolness and justice....Then you need to see this movie. All I need is for this movie to be released on DVD.

Authentic costuming!
The pleasant, lighthearted love story was lots of fun--and the costuming was amazingly authentic. Many thoughtful touches, beautiful settings, historically correct outfits and accessories make this a lovely and visually appealing film--what a wonderful change of pace!
